Animation & Motion Graphics

Film & Video Production

360 Animation Example

What are you most passionate about, in your life and work?

In my life I find my passion in any activity that keeps me present. Being outdoors in the woods or on the beach, and playing guitar are some of the ways I’ve found that remind me to take in this moment! In work I find passion in getting to tell stories that delight (And educate wherever possible!)

This role can and will be very technical. Describe your skill set and level of mastery as it relates to VR post production (After Effects, Nuke, AVP, Mistika...)

I’ve worked in After Effects in almost every role I’ve had professionally in varying technical levels. I have a scripting background in Maya, so any chance I have to work with Expressions in After Effects I jump at! I have been looking into learning materials for JavaScript within After Effects (Which bears a lot of resemblance to MEL script) to further what I can create, to make the processes I find myself going through a lot, more efficient, and to possibly make tools for others to use that might speed up their processes or explain some of mine. I am very confident in my ability to self-start, learn new technologies, and come up with a solution to the problem at hand. A few year ago I wanted to try creating a 360 environment that was illustrated, after doing some research I tried out some tools that were being introduced into After Effects CC. What I found was that the hardware in my workstation was a little too out of date to use those tools, but I found that YouTube had made a script that would add the correct metadata to a video for YouTube to see it as a 360 video. I tried some different lens filters in After Effects and tried to distort the illustration I’d done to match what a stitched 360 panoramic video would look like, but didn’t have much luck. So eventually what I landed on was finding a plugin for Maya that would create a camera setup to match a stitched 360 panoramic video, so I set up the illustration I’d done in a series of planes at varying distances from the camera, rendered that out of Maya, took it into After Effects and rendered out a video, then injected the video with the correct metadata. I took a stab at revisiting it for this application and following the same steps I was able to add more elements with motion graphics elements and some extra bells and whistles done in After Effects, which I really had a lot of fun doing!
